Be dead Boring... or be dead Excitin'

What words does Rita use to express her enthusiasm for Macbeth?

"... I thought it was gonna be dead borin'..."
"... But Listen, it wasn't borin', it was bleedin' great, honest, ogh, it done me in, it was fantastic."
"... It was dead good. It was like a thriller."
" I just thought it was a dead excitin' story."

Rita was so delighted with the play, she felt so happy about her discovery, that she was eager to write an essay and tell Frank how did she feel. It was a completely new experience for her and the fact that she enjoyed the play promoted or encouraged her with the writing of the essay.

Could she use these words in an essay?

Of course she cannot use these words (read above) in the essay. This is colloquial language and she should use formal language do an essay.

Hi Pam,

I agree with you in that Rita's colloquial English is not right to do an essay. I think that she should also take a course in Language to help her in Literature, don't you think so?

Hi Lili,
Haha... Rita would envy your ability to learn vocabulary!

I think education should promote an integral development of the being (spiritual, physical and mental). In Rita's situation, the lessons she is taking with Frank are just the beginning of everything.

Now, Lili and Pam, who says Rita's language is not "appropriate" for an essay? Why's that? Is it right to force Rita to use a language which is not her own to express her ideas at college?

And thinking in terms of politics, who is ruling here? And how democratic is it?

Lots of questions, right? You may want to have a look at our discussion on Standard English in the class wiki before replying to this comment!

That's all for now...
Love,
Gladys

Hi Gladys,
As a teacher of mine said to me... "You are expected to use an academic language at Tertiary Level."
The idea is that she has to learn to use the language to express her ideas.
Her ideas are right, but language is a tool and we cannot transmit our ideas with out sharing the same language.
