We all want to have the ability to distinguish between what is good and what is bad. Animals have a great advantage over human beings, because they seem already programed to live in certain way - the correct way!
But what is amazing is the fact that we - human beings- are FREE to choose the way we live. To be honest, we are always limited by our own possibilities (cultural, economical, physical, etc.), but what is true is the fact that we can choose among many options. There is always another option, another viewpoint, another side of the situations, it depends on where are we standing (or where we choose to stand) at the very moment.
There are many things I can do, because I'm free, but not everything depends on my will. People's necesities and wills restrict my freedom (and the other way about). Anyway it is important to be consciuos of our freedom, because it is a powerful tool through which we can make a difference in the world... How? for example transmiting our values.
To sum up, we are free to choose the way (the good or the bad one) in which we live. But we have to be careful no to mistake what we choose. We have to learn the "art of living," that is learn to live in a good way.

It doesn't make much sense to talk about "the correct way" when there's only one way, does it, Pame? Or when the doer is unaware of other options (you can read more about this here, if you're interested)...
Anyway, assuming we do have freedom and choices, who says I should take other people's needs and interests into account??? How free will I actually be if I have to consider what so many around me need and want?
In other words, do you believe altruism is a choice? Or do you think, instead, that egoism cannot be morally supported?
Big hug,
Gladys
Hi Gladys!
If there is only one way, this must or right or wrong? I think there is one initial way for everybody, and then many paths which cross the first way, which are the desicions we take(which can be right or wrong).
Now, talking about freedom, we are free but there are always some external factors (culture, etc.) which determine our options. Of course I can choose not to take care of others, but because of respect I think that at least we should be awared of the existence of others, trying not to run over them, consider or take them into account (just because we are living together).
I don't believe any extreme is good, so I consider that altruism is ok as long as you can, but you also have your needs... So be balanced.
See you,
Pam
I certainly see your point, Pamela... Now, if you look backwards, is this what you were taught as a child? (no need to answer here; for sure we'll go back to this issue as we go through new chapters).
LOL,
Gladys
